ATS Scorer is a free ATS resume checker that shows how applicant tracking systems read your resume. Upload your CV, optionally paste the job description, and get an ATS score out of 100 with the exact keywords you are missing, section and formatting checks, and simple tips to fix them. It is 100% free, needs no signup and has no daily limit — built for freshers and experienced job seekers in India and worldwide.

How our free ATS checker works

  1. Step 1

    Upload your resume

Drop a PDF or DOCX (up to 5 MB). It is read in memory and deleted right after the scan.

  2. Step 2

    Paste the job description

Optional, but recommended: we compare your resume with the exact keywords of the job.

  3. Step 3

    Get your ATS score

See your score out of 100, missing keywords, section checks and a prioritised list of fixes.

Behind the scenes, the checker extracts the plain text from your file the same way most ATS software does, then runs more than 40 rule-based checks. It looks for standard section headings, your contact details, the number of bullet points that contain measurable results, action verbs, first-person pronouns, repeated words, page length, multi-column layouts and image-based PDFs. When you paste a job description, it pulls out the top 30 skills and phrases from it and checks each one against your resume, including common variants like “ReactJS” and “React.js” or “ML” and “machine learning”.

Your score is a weighted mix of five parts: keywords (35% with a job description), sections (20%), content quality (20%), formatting (15%) and contact information (10%). Every lost point turns into a tip, sorted from high to low priority, so you always know what to fix first.

What is an ATS score?

An ATS (applicant tracking system) is software that companies use to collect, sort and search job applications. Popular systems include Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, Taleo, iCIMS and, in India, Naukri RMS and Darwinbox. When you apply, the ATS converts your resume into plain text, splits it into fields such as experience, education and skills, and lets recruiters search or rank candidates by keywords.

An ATS score is an estimate of how well your resume will survive that process: whether the software can read it, whether your sections are recognised, and how closely your skills match the job. Real ATS products don't show you a number, and each one behaves a little differently, but the problems that hurt your chances are the same everywhere — missing keywords, unreadable layouts and vague bullet points. Our score measures exactly those problems. Read more in what an ATS is and how it reads your resume.

What is a good ATS score?

Aim for 75 or higher for the jobs you care about most. Here is how to read your result:

  • 85–100Excellent. Very likely to pass ATS filters. Focus on tailoring keywords for each job.
  • 70–84Good. A few fixes — usually missing keywords or numbers in bullets — will make it strong.
  • 50–69Average. Fix the high-priority tips before you apply; you may be filtered out for some roles.
  • 0–49Needs work. The ATS may not read your resume correctly. Start with format and sections.

A perfect 100 is not the goal. A resume stuffed with keywords can score well with software and still fail with the recruiter who reads it next. See our full guide on what a good ATS score is.

How to improve your ATS score

  1. Match the job description. Copy the exact names of skills and tools the job asks for — but only the ones you really have — into your Skills section and bullet points.
  2. Use standard headings. Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Projects and Certifications. Creative headings like “My Journey” confuse parsers.
  3. Choose a single-column layout. Two-column templates, tables and text boxes are often read in the wrong order.
  4. Save as a text-based PDF or DOCX. Never upload a scanned image or a photo of your resume.
  5. Add numbers to your bullets. At least a third of your bullet points should show a result: %, ₹, time saved, users, rank.
  6. Start bullets with action verbs such as Built, Led, Reduced, Launched — not “Responsible for”.
  7. Put contact details in the body, not in the header or footer area, with your LinkedIn URL written as text.
  8. Keep it to 1–2 pages and remove personal details like date of birth, religion or a photo.

ATS checker vs manual resume review

A manual review by a mentor, senior or career coach is valuable: a human can judge your story, your achievements and how you compare with other candidates. But people can't see what the software sees. They won't notice that your two-column template merges lines, that your PDF is an image, or that you wrote “MS Excel” while the job post searches for “Advanced Excel” and “Power Query”.

An ATS resume checker is fast, objective and free to repeat after every edit. The best approach is to use both: run your resume through the checker until the high-priority issues are gone, then ask a person to review the content. That way your resume passes the machine and impresses the human.

Who is this free resume checker for?

Anyone applying through online job portals. It is especially useful for freshers and students in India applying through Naukri, LinkedIn, Indeed, Internshala and campus drives, where hundreds of resumes compete for each opening. Experienced professionals use it to tailor their resume for a specific job in a few minutes, and career switchers use it to check that their new skills are visible. You can also use our role-specific checkers, which compare your resume with the most common keywords for that job:

Is it safe to upload my resume?

Yes. Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, read in memory to extract the text, scored, and then discarded. We never save your resume or its text to a disk or database, we don't log its contents, and we don't ask for your name, email or phone number. Details are in our privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is this ATS checker really free?

Yes, 100% free, no signup, no limits. You don't need to create an account or share your email. The site is supported by ads and a few affiliate links.

Do you store my resume?

No. Your file is processed in memory on the server to extract the text, scored, and immediately discarded. We never save the file or its text, and we never log your resume content.

How is the ATS score calculated?

The score combines five checks: keyword match (35% when you paste a job description), sections (20%), content quality such as numbers and action verbs (20%), formatting (15%) and contact details (10%). Without a job description, keywords count for 25% and sections and content for 25% each.

What is a good ATS score?

75 or above is a good target. 85+ is excellent. If you score below 50, the ATS may not read your resume properly — fix the high-priority tips first, usually format, sections and missing keywords.

Should I paste the job description?

Yes, whenever you can. Each company's ATS ranks you against its own job post, so pasting the description lets us show exactly which keywords you are missing for that job.

Which file format is best for ATS: PDF or DOCX?

Both work if they contain real text. A text-based PDF exported from Word or Google Docs is usually safest. Never upload a scanned resume or a photo, and avoid PDFs made from images in design tools.

Why does my resume score low even though it looks good?

Designs that look good to people — two columns, icons, skill bars, text boxes and tables — are often hard for ATS software to read. Missing keywords and bullet points without results are the other common reasons.

Does this work for freshers and Indian job portals like Naukri?

Yes. The checker understands Indian phone numbers, cities, degrees and tools like Tally and GST, and it works for resumes you upload to Naukri, LinkedIn, Indeed, Internshala and company career sites.

Is this score the same as what companies see?

No tool can show the exact score of a company's ATS, because every system and every recruiter search is different. Our score is an estimate based on the factors that affect almost all ATS software.

Can I check my resume more than once?

Of course. Edit your resume, upload it again and see how your score changes. There is no daily limit for normal use.
