Is a Canva Resume ATS Friendly? (Honest Answer)
Canva resumes look great, but many fail ATS parsing. Learn which Canva designs are safe, what breaks, how to test your file, and when to switch to Word.
Canva is where many students and freshers in India make their first resume. The templates are beautiful, free and easy to edit. But there's a catch: a resume that looks impressive to you may be unreadable to the applicant tracking system that sees it first.
So, is a Canva resume ATS friendly? It can be — but most Canva resume templates are not, out of the box. Here's why, and how to make yours work.
Why many Canva resumes fail ATS
Canva is a graphic design tool. Its templates are designed to look good as images, and many use design features that parsers struggle with:
Multiple columns
Most popular Canva resumes have a sidebar for contact details and skills and a main column for experience. Many ATS parsers read across the page, so lines from the two columns get mixed.
Text in graphic elements
Headings inside shapes, text on coloured banners and decorative elements may be extracted in the wrong order, or not at all.
Icons, skill bars and ratings
Phone and email icons, five-dot skill ratings and progress bars carry meaning for humans but are invisible or meaningless to software.
Photos and decorative images
They add file size, take space and contain no readable text.
Export settings
Some export options — especially flattened PDFs — turn text into images, leaving nothing for the ATS to read.
What our checker typically finds in Canva resumes
When people run designed resumes through our ATS checker, the most common warnings are:
- Multi-column layout detected — the ATS may read columns in the wrong order;
- Heavy use of icons or symbols;
- No clear section headings — headings inside shapes aren't recognised;
- Very little readable text for the file size — content inside images or graphics;
- Image-based PDF — in the worst case, no text at all.
How to make a Canva resume ATS friendly
If you want to keep using Canva, follow these rules:
- Pick a single-column template. Search "simple resume" or "minimal resume". Avoid sidebars.
- Delete the photo, icons and skill bars. Replace icons with plain labels ("Email:", "Phone:").
- Use real text boxes for all text. Don't put headings in shapes or text inside images.
- Use standard headings: Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Projects, Certifications.
- Keep the reading order simple: each section stacked top to bottom, not side by side.
- Choose a standard font: Open Sans, Lato, Roboto or Arimo.
- Export as "PDF Standard" and don't tick "Flatten PDF".
- Test the file before using it (see below).
How to test your Canva PDF
Copy-paste test: open the PDF, select all text, copy and paste it into Notepad. If the text appears complete and in the right order, you're in good shape. If lines are mixed up or missing, the ATS will have the same problem.
ATS checker test: upload the PDF to our free ATS resume checker. It shows formatting issues, detected sections and a score — and tells you specifically if the layout looks multi-column or image-based.
When to switch to Word or Google Docs
If your Canva resume keeps failing the tests, rebuilding it in Word or Google Docs usually takes less than an hour and removes the risk entirely. Follow our guide to making an ATS-friendly resume in Word, Google Docs or Canva, or start from our free ATS resume template.
A good approach for design-heavy careers:
- ATS version (simple, single-column) for online applications and portals;
- Designed version (Canva) to share in interviews, by email to hiring managers who asked for it, or as part of a portfolio.
A quick Canva fix list
If you already have a Canva resume and need to apply today, make these changes in this order:
- Move sidebar content into the main column — skills, contact details and languages go above or below your experience, not beside it.
- Replace icons next to your phone, email and LinkedIn with plain text labels.
- Delete skill bars and ratings; list skills as words, grouped by category.
- Rename creative headings ("My Story", "What I Do") to standard ones.
- Remove the photo unless the job specifically asks for one.
- Export as PDF Standard, then run the copy-paste test and an ATS check.
These six steps usually turn a failing Canva resume into a readable one in under 30 minutes.
What about designers?
Graphic and UI/UX designers often feel a plain resume undersells their skills. The ATS doesn't care about your layout — but the hiring manager will look at your portfolio. Keep your resume simple and put a portfolio link (Behance, Dribbble, personal site) at the top as plain text. See our tips for UI/UX designer resumes and graphic designer resumes.
Key takeaways
- Many Canva templates aren't ATS friendly because of columns, icons and graphic text.
- A single-column Canva resume with real text and a standard PDF export can work.
- Always test with copy-paste or an ATS checker before applying.
- Keep a simple ATS version for applications and a designed version for humans.
