Skills to Put on a Resume in 2026 (With Examples by Job)
Which skills to put on your resume in 2026: how to pick them from the job post, how many to list, and examples for every job family.
Your skills section is the part of your resume that applicant tracking systems lean on most. Recruiters search their ATS for skills by name, and many systems compare the skills in your resume with the skills in the job post. Choose the wrong ones — or describe the right ones in the wrong words — and you can disappear from the shortlist.
This guide shows you how to pick the right skills, how many to include, how to present them, and which skills employers in India are asking for in 2026.
Start with the job description, not a generic list
The best skills for your resume are the ones the employer has already told you they want. Open the job description and highlight:
- Tools and software — Excel, Power BI, Tally Prime, SAP, Salesforce, Figma, AWS.
- Hard skills — financial modelling, SEO, lesson planning, statutory audit, API testing.
- Methods and frameworks — Agile, Six Sigma, GAAP, Ind AS, OOP.
- Soft skills that are repeated — stakeholder management, communication, leadership.
Then compare the list with what you can genuinely do. That overlap is your skills section. Our free ATS checker does this automatically: paste the job description and it lists the skills you're missing, marking which ones the employer calls required.
How many skills should you list?
For most resumes, 10–20 skills is the sweet spot:
- Freshers: 8–15 skills, mostly tools and technical basics you've used in projects.
- Experienced professionals: 12–20 skills, weighted towards the job's core tools and domain skills.
More isn't better. A list of 40 skills looks unfocused, and interviewers will ask about any of them.
Present skills in groups
A grouped skills section is easier for both ATS software and recruiters to scan:
SKILLS
Analytics: SQL, Advanced Excel (Power Query, Pivot Tables), Statistics
Visualisation: Power BI, Tableau
Programming: Python (Pandas)
Business: Stakeholder Management, Requirements Gathering
Avoid skill bars, star ratings and percentages — ATS can't read them, and "80% Excel" means nothing to a recruiter.
Prove your top skills in bullet points
Listing a skill helps you match a search. Using it in a bullet point proves it. Our checker gives full credit to keywords that appear in your experience or projects and slightly less to keywords that only appear in the skills list. For your three to five most important skills, write at least one bullet like:
Built 12 Power BI dashboards using SQL for 30 regional managers, cutting weekly reporting time by 6 hours.
In-demand skills by job family (2026)

Hard skills vs soft skills
Recruiters search mostly for hard skills and tools, so they should make up most of your list. Soft skills still matter, but they're more convincing when demonstrated in bullet points than listed as adjectives. Read our detailed guide on hard skills vs soft skills.
Write skill names exactly as employers do
Exact wording matters because some ATS products match literally:
| Instead of | Write |
|---|---|
| PowerBI | Power BI |
| MS Excel (if the JD says Advanced Excel) | Advanced Excel |
| Node | Node.js |
| Tally software | Tally Prime |
| Digital ads | Google Ads, Meta Ads |
Include acronym and full form once where both are common: "Search Engine Optimization (SEO)".
Skills to leave out
- Basics everyone is assumed to have: "Internet browsing", "Typing", "MS Paint".
- Outdated tools, unless the job asks for them.
- Skills you can't discuss in an interview.
- Personality traits with no evidence: "hardworking", "dynamic", "go-getter".
