ATS-Friendly Resume for Internships (With Example)

How students can write an ATS-friendly internship resume with little experience: sections, project bullets, skills, an example, and tips for Internshala and LinkedIn.

By ATS Scorer TeamUpdated: 4 min read

Internship applications are competitive in a different way from full-time jobs. Platforms like Internshala, LinkedIn and company career pages receive thousands of applications from students with similar degrees and similar coursework. Many companies use applicant tracking systems or platform filters to shortlist — and recruiters often spend even less time per resume than for full-time roles.

The good news: nobody expects work experience. What they want is evidence of skills, initiative and the ability to learn fast. Here's how to show that in a resume that ATS software and recruiters can read easily.

What recruiters look for in intern resumes

  • Relevant skills that match the internship description
  • Projects — academic, personal, hackathon or freelance — that use those skills
  • Coursework and grades relevant to the role
  • Initiative — clubs, competitions, volunteering, side projects, certifications
  • Availability — dates, duration, full-time or part-time, remote or on-site

The best section order for an internship resume

  1. Contact details (with LinkedIn and GitHub/portfolio)
  2. Summary (2 lines) — optional but helpful
  3. Education (with relevant coursework)
  4. Skills
  5. Projects
  6. Experience (previous internships, part-time work, freelancing — if any)
  7. Certifications
  8. Achievements and Activities

Keep it to one page.

How to write each section

Summary: your target and your best proof

Name the internship type, your availability and one strong result. Two lines are enough.

Education: include relevant coursework

Since your degree is in progress, list expected graduation year and CGPA. Adding 3–4 relevant courses gives the ATS more keywords to match.

Skills: match the internship post

Read the posting and copy the exact skill names you genuinely have. For a data internship: "Python, Pandas, SQL, Excel, Power BI". For a design internship: "Figma, Canva, Adobe Illustrator, wireframing". Our resume keywords by role can help.

Projects: the heart of your resume

For each project, write the name, tools used, and 1–3 bullets with results. Use numbers wherever possible: users, followers, accuracy, time saved, data size, ranking. See how to write bullet points with numbers.

Experience: anything counts

Previous internships, part-time jobs, freelance gigs, teaching assistant roles, family business work and volunteering all show responsibility. Describe them with action verbs and results.

Achievements and activities

Hackathons, competitions, olympiads, club leadership, NSS/NCC, sports and event organisation show initiative. Quantify them: "Organised a workshop for 250 students."

Platform tips

  • Internshala: complete your profile fully, answer the "Why should you be hired?" question specifically for each internship, and attach your resume and portfolio links.
  • LinkedIn: turn on Open to Work for internships, add skills and projects to your profile, and message recruiters with a short, specific note.
  • Company career pages: follow the format they ask for and check deadlines — many summer internships close months in advance.

Common mistakes

  • Using a colourful two-column Canva template that ATS can't parse — see is a Canva resume ATS friendly?
  • Writing "Objective: to gain experience in a reputed company"
  • Listing every subject from your syllabus
  • No links to projects, GitHub or portfolio
  • Not stating availability (dates and duration)
