How to Check If Your Resume Is ATS Friendly (5 Quick Tests)

Five quick tests to check if your resume is ATS friendly — the copy-paste test, a free ATS scan, a heading check, a keyword check and a file check — with fixes.

You've polished your resume, but one question remains: will applicant tracking systems actually read it correctly? A resume can look perfect on your screen and still come out as jumbled text inside an ATS — and you'd never know, because rejected applications rarely get a reply.

The good news is that you can check in a few minutes. Here are five quick tests, from the simplest to the most thorough, and what to do if your resume fails any of them.

Test 1: The copy-paste test (1 minute)

This is the fastest way to see your resume the way software sees it.

  1. Open your resume PDF.
  2. Press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on Mac) to select everything, then Ctrl+C to copy.
  3. Paste into Notepad, TextEdit or any plain-text editor.

Now read what you pasted. Your resume is probably ATS friendly if:

  • all of your text appears — nothing is missing;
  • it reads top to bottom in the right order;
  • your name, phone and email are at the top;
  • bullets and dashes look normal, with no strange symbols or boxes.

Warning signs: you can't select any text at all (the PDF is an image or a scan); lines from a sidebar are mixed into your job descriptions (a two-column layout); your contact details are missing (they were in the document header or footer); or icons appear as random characters.

Test 2: Run a free ATS scan (1 minute)

The copy-paste test tells you whether text is readable. An ATS checker goes further: it checks sections, keywords and content the way recruiters' systems do.

Upload your resume to our free ATS resume checker. In about 10 seconds you'll see:

  • an ATS score out of 100 with a breakdown;
  • whether we could detect standard sections (Experience, Education, Skills and so on);
  • formatting problems such as multi-column layouts, image-based PDFs, icons and mixed date formats;
  • content issues such as bullets without numbers, weak openers and first-person writing;
  • if you paste a job description, the exact keywords you're missing.

A score of 75 or more generally means your resume is ATS friendly and well matched. Freshers should aim for 65–75. If you see an "image or scan" warning, fix that before anything else.

Test 3: The heading check (2 minutes)

ATS software sorts your information using section headings. Look at each heading in your resume and compare it with this list:

Recognised headingRisky alternatives
Summary / ProfileAbout Me, Who I Am
Experience / Work ExperienceMy Journey, Career Path
EducationAcademic Voyage
Skills / Technical SkillsToolbox, Superpowers
ProjectsThings I've Built
CertificationsBadges, Learning

Also check that each heading sits on its own line, not inside a shape, banner or image.

Test 4: The keyword check (3 minutes)

A resume can be perfectly readable and still fail to appear in recruiter searches if it doesn't contain the right words.

  1. Open a job description you want to apply for.
  2. Highlight the skills, tools and job titles it mentions.
  3. Search your resume (Ctrl+F) for each one.

If fewer than about two-thirds of the important terms appear — and you genuinely have those skills — your resume isn't matched to the job yet. Add them to your Skills section and to relevant bullet points, using the employer's exact spelling. Our checker automates this: paste the job description and it lists every matched and missing keyword.

Test 5: The file check (1 minute)

Finally, check the file itself:

  • Type: PDF or DOCX. Not .doc, .jpg, .png or a Google Docs link.
  • Created in: Word, Google Docs or similar — not scanned, photographed or exported as a flattened image.
  • Size: usually under 1 MB. A 3–5 MB resume often means large images inside.
  • Name: Firstname-Lastname-Resume.pdf, not final_resume_v7 (2).pdf.
  • Pages: one page for freshers, one to two for most experienced professionals.

If you're unsure which format to use, read PDF vs DOCX for ATS.

Signs your resume is NOT ATS friendly

You can often spot problems without any tool. Be suspicious if your resume has:

  • two or three columns, or a coloured sidebar;
  • skill bars, star ratings, charts or icons;
  • a photo, logo or background graphic;
  • text inside tables or text boxes;
  • contact details only in the header or footer;
  • decorative fonts or unusual symbols;
  • been designed in a graphic design tool — read is a Canva resume ATS friendly?.

What to do if your resume fails

  1. Can't copy the text? Rebuild the resume in Word or Google Docs and export a new PDF. See how to make an ATS-friendly resume in Word, Google Docs or Canva.
  2. Columns mixed up? Switch to a single-column layout. Our ATS-friendly resume format guide shows the structure, or start from the free DOCX template.
  3. Sections not detected? Rename headings to the standard ones above.
  4. Missing keywords? Tailor your resume to the job — here's how to do it in 10 minutes.
  5. Low content score? Add numbers to your bullets and start them with action verbs. Our guide on how to increase your ATS score walks through every fix.

Then run the tests again. Most resumes go from "risky" to "ATS friendly" in one editing session.

Key takeaways

  • The copy-paste test shows in one minute whether software can read your resume.
  • A free ATS scan checks sections, formatting, content and keywords together.
  • Standard headings, a single column and real text are non-negotiable.
  • Readable isn't enough — your resume also needs the job's keywords.
  • Re-test after every change; aim for 75+ before you apply.
